Weekends Round Up 16th OCT

CROSS COUNTRY

The weekend saw the start of the cross-country season for adults and youngsters alike.

7 Leamington C&AC athletes travelled to Gloucester to take part in the first race of the Gloucester Cross Country League. Marc Curtis was first home for the men’s team, finishing in 34:00 with Steve Howes coming in just 10 seconds behind. Steve Roberts finished in 38:21 with Alex Montgomery (41:06) making up the team which finished 9th overall. In the MV65 race Graham Roberts finished in 30:27 and Noel Butler in 33:59. Jenny Jeeves was the only lady to take part for LCAC finishing in 25:36.

The majority of LCAC’s cross country fans were saving themselves for a more light-hearted club race which was put on after the club hosted the first round of the West Midlands Youth Athletics Cross Country League at Hatton Country World. The day saw strong runs from a number of athletes with a number of them having competed in the primary school or secondary school races the day before.

SCHOOLS X-COUNTRY

Mel Gould had had a busy week competing on Monday in the School’s Cup qualifiers at Princethorpe College. An excellent run saw her win her race but unfortunately the team did not finish high enough to qualify for the National event. Saturday saw Gould coming a fine fourth in the County trials at Stratford School. Gould, who is in school year 8, competed against other year 8 and 9’s to run a competitive race, finishing 1st in her school year and making the county team. Taking it in her stride, Gould turned up to the WMYACCL race at Hatton to battle it out against three Rugby and Northampton runners in the U13 girls race, the toughest course of the week was no match for the girls who engaged in a sprint finish with Gould coming fourth overall.

ROAD RACING

Back on the road Leamington’s Vassilis Andreoulakis and Peter Stockbridge took part in the Simplyhealth Birmingham marathon, finishing in a time of 3:13:03 and 3:41:43 respectively.

Leamington C&AC’s Susie Tawney represented Great Britain in the European Canicross Championships in Italy at the weekend. Tawney, and pet dog, Rivelin, had their trip threatened due to illness and injury in the weeks up to the event but both managed to get back into full health in time to see their efforts rewarded with a silver medal in the competition.
