Race the Train

The Gould family, who all run for Leamington C&AC, competed in their 10th Race the Train at the weekend with three of them taking first place prizes. The race, held along  the Tallyllyn Steam Railway in Tywyn, Wales, sees runners racing the steam train in a festival of running.

Phil Gould decided to try the 5.5 mile Dolgoch challenge this year, this being the only race he had yet to compete in. Gould did not disappoint, crossing the finish line in first place in a time of 31:50.

Melanie and James Gould ran the 3 mile Tynllwynhen challenge, James came second overall in a time of 19:17 but claiming first prize in the age category with sister Mel winning first in her age category in 21:23.

Laura Gould ran in the 14 mile Rotary challenge with friend Claire Goult (Kenilworth Runners), both ladies crossed the line in 2:27:23. Another LCAC family were also present, returning for their third time.

Howard Roden who had yet to beat the train, returned to run the 14 mile race which sees runners run 7 miles up the valley before returning along more trickier terrain. Roden was successful in his quest and beat the train by approximately 5 minutes finishing in 1:43:25. Roden managed to make it down onto the platform to meet his family who had been watching from the train, having run in the 3 mile event earlier that day.

Archie had run a strong race finishing 5th overall in a time of 20:01, whilst Isla finished in 23:25 and in 23rd position. Mum, Kate, crossed the line in 27:25.

 Leonie Holt, also of LCAC, had entered the 14 mile Rotary Challenge, finishing in a time of 2:21:47. 

British Masters Championships

Phil Gould, of Leamington Cycling and Athletics Club, competed in the British Masters Athletics Championships at the weekend competing in the 1500m and 800m. Saturday saw a wet and windy 1500m which started out slow due to the weather. Gould finished 4th in a time of 4:26:06. Returning on Sunday for, what he felt was his stronger race, Gould set off in the 800m to settle in second place after the first lap. Fighting for his position with 250m to go he was overtaken on the final bend, however Gould kicked hard reclaiming second place and narrowly missing out on a win in a tight finish. He crossed the line in 2:04:71 a 10th of a second behind first place. 

Summer 6

Saturday saw the 8th race in the Warwickshire Road Race League, a Summer’s evening 6 mile race hosted by Stratford Upon Avon Athletics Club. Leamington C&AC fielded 12 competitors with Kelly Edwards, on fine form, crossing the line as first lady in a time of 36:12. Dominic Priest had a fight on his hands at the finish to cross the line in third place (32:39) just 4 seconds behind Chris Sharp of Knowle and Dorridge. Zara Blower decided to run with her mum, Carol, in what was the last race before her marriage next weekend. Mother and Daughter crossed the line in 50:31.
