Road running is one of the most accessible divisions of athletics and one of the most accessible sports in the UK. This is proven out by the growing popularity of mass participation charity road races, our own 10k the 2 castles a prime example – sold out in hours and the London marathon which is over subscribed in excess of 5 times. The weekly 5km Park run events now attract around a quarter of a million runners across the UK.
Road running involves a measured course on an established road and is categorised as a long distance event in athletics terms, typically ranging from 5km up to a Marathon (26.2 miles / 42.2km), although ultras go beyond this. Road races are held on a sealed surface, where greater than 5 to 10% of the surface is unsealed this is considered multi terrain.
The club has runners of wide variety abilities and therefore provides varied training sessions from 5km upwards, but members can also utilise our track coaching sessions to improve their speed, with several track based road running group sessions held throughout the week.
As well as open races, as a club member you also get the opportunity to participate in Road Race relays, with the club entering several teams in regional qualifiers and normally a team gaining access to national finals.
